Basics - Learn English step by stepWord: Word is the basic unit of the language, It can be classified to the action and meaning. A word refers to a speech and it contains a combination of letters in it.

Sentence: A Sentence is the largest unit of the language of the English. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. it is a group of the combination of words used to express a concept or idea with a statement or asking a question or exclaiming.
Example: John is a good boy.

Structural Types of Sentence

  1. Simple Sentence.
  2. Compound Sentence.
  3. Complex Sentence.
  4. Compound-Complex Sentence.

Simple Sentence: Simple Sentence consists of a single clause (one verb) it is independent and cannot have another clause.
Example: John always wanted to play.

Compound Sentence: Compound sentence consists of more than one independent clause, two clauses can be joined using junctions and punctuations.
Example: John always wanted to play, and Mary wanted to study.

Complex Sentence: Complex sentence also consists of more than one clause, one is independent and other is dependent two clauses can be joined using some connectors.
Example: I know that John always wanted to play.

Compound-Complex Sentence: Compound-Complex sentence is a mixture of compound and complex sentence in one sentence. It consists of two independent clauses and one dependent clause.
Example: I know that John always wanted to play, but Mary wanted to study.

Functional Types of Sentence

  1. Declarative or Assertive Sentence.
  2. Imperative Sentence.
  3. interrogative Sentence.
  4. Exclamatory Sentence.

Declarative or Assertive Sentence: Declarative or Assertive sentence expresses the feeling or makes a statement, and ends with a full stop.
Examples:

    • I want to be a good teacher. (Statement)
    • I am very happy today. (Feeling)

Imperative Sentence: Imperative sentence is used to request or command and it ends with a full stop but in certain situations, it can end with an exclamation.
Examples:

    • Please sit down. (Request)
    • I need you to sit down now! (Exclamation !)

Interrogative Sentence: Interrogative sentence asks questions and it must end with Interrogative mark that is a question mark?
Examples:

    • When are you coming back?
    • Do you know her?

Exclamatory Sentence: Exclamatory sentence Expresses emotions like happiness, wonder, sorrow, anger, and must end with exclamatory mark!
Examples:

    • What a nice party it was!
    • I can not believe she would do that!
